The typewriter in the photo is an Olivetti Lettera 22, one of the classic portables of all time. My Dad owned one during my childhood in Buenos Aires in the 1950s and 1960s. Sadly, I left it behind when he died and I emigrated. It is one of many such objects that I have used over the years to reconstruct the family I lost when I was a boy. I tell more of such stories in my new book, Recollections: Bringing Back My Long-Gone Parents One Thing at a Time. The Olivetti brings back Dad. He was a prolific letter writer. His correspondence is full of quotations of the German romantics, such as Schiller and Goethe. Of course, having a photo of the Lettera 22 is not the same as having Dad’s typewriter. Yet the image brings back his style and inspires me to strive to his level of writing excellence.
